Tooth Preservation

Periodontology in Aachen

Healthy gums are the foundation for long-term stable teeth. In periodontology we treat inflammation of the gums and the tooth-supporting structures in a targeted way – with the aim of stopping the inflammation, protecting the bone and preserving your own teeth.

What is periodontology?

Periodontology deals with diseases of the tooth-supporting structures – that is, the tissue that anchors the teeth in the jaw. It often begins with a gum inflammation (gingivitis), which shows itself through redness and bleeding gums. If left untreated, it can develop into periodontitis, in which the gums and bone recede.

Why it matters

The foundation your teeth stand on

Untreated, periodontitis can lead to the loss of individual teeth; in addition, according to current knowledge, it is linked to general health. With systematic treatment the inflammation can in most cases be controlled well and its progression permanently halted.

With a corresponding diagnosis, the systematic periodontitis therapy is usually covered by the statutory health insurance. Which services are intended in your case and whether supplementary, privately paid measures may be useful is something we discuss openly and clearly in your findings consultation.

Frequently asked questions

How do I recognise periodontitis?

A common first sign is bleeding gums when brushing. Reddened or swollen gums, persistent bad breath, exposed tooth necks or teeth that become loose can also indicate periodontitis. Certainty comes from an examination that measures the gum pockets.

Is periodontitis curable?

Bone that has already been lost does not, as a rule, grow back on its own. The inflammation, however, can in most cases be stopped well and the condition kept stable – provided the treatment is continued consistently and accompanied by regular aftercare.

Does health insurance cover the treatment?

With a corresponding diagnosis, the systematic periodontitis therapy is usually covered by the statutory health insurance. What exactly applies to you and whether additional services come into question is something we clarify clearly in the findings consultation.

How long does the therapy take?

That depends on the findings. The active treatment is followed by an ongoing aftercare phase (supportive periodontal therapy) at regular intervals. Periodontitis is a chronic disease whose course is managed over the long term.

How can I prevent it?

Decisive factors are thorough home oral hygiene with cleaning of the spaces between the teeth, regular professional dental cleanings and avoiding smoking. Check-up appointments help to detect and treat early signs in good time.
