Why professional teeth cleaning matters
Thorough brushing at home is the foundation – but a toothbrush and floss alone cannot reliably reach some areas. This is where professional teeth cleaning (PZR) comes in. It complements home care and is an important building block of prevention.
What is professional teeth cleaning?
Professional teeth cleaning is a thorough cleaning of the teeth by trained practice staff. It removes deposits and discoloration that accumulate during daily brushing – including in hard-to-reach areas such as the spaces between the teeth and along the gum line.
What happens during a PZR
The exact procedure depends on your findings, but it often includes the following steps:
- Checking the teeth and gums as well as assessing oral hygiene.
- Removing hard and soft deposits, including in the interdental spaces.
- Removing surface discoloration, for example from coffee, tea or tobacco.
- Polishing the tooth surfaces so that new deposits adhere less easily.
- Tips for home care, tailored to your situation.
Why it complements home care
Bacterial deposits are a major factor in the development of cavities and gum inflammation. Even with careful care, areas remain that are difficult to reach at home – such as narrow interdental spaces, the area at the gum line or the backs of the teeth. Over time, soft deposits can accumulate and harden there. The PZR helps to remove these deposits regularly and thereby reduce the risk of disease. It does not replace daily brushing but specifically supports it in the areas that the toothbrush would otherwise miss.
How often is a PZR advisable?
How often professional teeth cleaning is advisable depends on your individual situation – for example on oral health, the condition of the gums and personal risk factors. There is no blanket figure for everyone; you receive the appropriate recommendation in the practice. Many statutory health insurers contribute proportionally or through bonus programs – it is best to ask your insurer directly about this.
