Veneers or composhaping – which is right for me?
Discolored, slightly chipped or irregularly shaped front teeth can be corrected in various ways today. Two frequently mentioned approaches are veneers and composhaping. Both have their strengths – which one suits you depends on your findings and your wishes.
What are veneers?
Veneers are wafer-thin facing shells, usually made of ceramic, that are applied to the visible front surface of the teeth. They are made individually and designed in the lab or digitally. Depending on the findings, this requires preparatory removal of tooth substance. Veneers are considered a durable solution, but they are more involved and usually not completed in a single session.
What is composhaping?
With composhaping (also called bonding), the dentist applies tooth-colored composite directly to the tooth and shapes it into the desired form. This often happens in a single session and is frequently especially gentle on the tooth. Composite can be readily added to or adjusted later, but compared with ceramic it is less resistant to wear and discoloration over the years.
The key differences at a glance
- Material: veneers are usually made of ceramic, composhaping of tooth-colored composite.
- Effort: veneers usually require several appointments, composhaping is often possible in a single session.
- Tooth substance: composhaping is often especially gentle; with veneers, some removal may be necessary depending on the findings.
- Durability: ceramic is very stable and color-stable; composite is easier to touch up but tends to wear down more.
What helps with the decision
Whether veneers or composhaping suit you better depends on how pronounced the change should be, how much tooth substance can be preserved and what expectations you have regarding durability and care. Your budget and the time frame also play a role. One method is not fundamentally "better" than the other – what matters is what fits your findings and your desired result.

What lasts longer – veneers or composhaping?
Ceramic veneers are considered very durable and color-stable. Composite is easy to touch up but tends to wear down more over the years. The lifespan also depends on care.
