How an aligner treatment works

Transparent trays, known as aligners, correct misaligned teeth discreetly and are removable. Many patients want to know in advance what to expect. Here is the typical course of an aligner treatment step by step.

1. Consultation and findings

At the start there is a conversation about your wishes and a thorough examination. This clarifies whether aligner therapy is suitable for your misalignment. Not every situation can be solved with trays – sometimes other methods make more sense. This honest assessment is part of a reputable consultation.

2. Digital planning

If the therapy is suitable, the teeth are recorded digitally – usually with an intraoral scanner instead of a conventional impression. On this basis, the planned course of treatment is visualized on the computer. This gives you an idea of how the teeth are to move step by step.

3. Wearing the trays

You receive a series of individually made trays that are worn one after another. Consistent wearing time is important for success – many hours per day are usual. The trays are removed for eating and tooth care, which makes oral hygiene easier. The following points are helpful in everyday life:

  • Keep to the recommended daily wearing time as closely as possible – it is decisive for the result.
  • Clean the trays only with lukewarm water, not with hot water.
  • Brush your teeth before reinserting them to prevent discoloration and cavities.
  • Only change to the next tray at the agreed time.

4. Check-up appointments

The progress is checked at regular intervals. This makes it possible to verify whether the teeth are moving as planned and to make adjustments if needed. The duration of the entire treatment is individual and depends on the starting situation.

5. Retention – securing the result

After the desired position has been reached, the retention phase follows. Teeth have a tendency to move back. A retainer – for example a thin holding tray or a fixed wire – helps to stabilize the result. This phase is an integral part of the treatment and should not be skipped.

We are happy to clarify whether an aligner treatment is suitable for you in a personal consultation appointment.

Frequently asked questions

How long do I have to wear the trays each day?

Aligners only take effect with consistent wearing time over many hours a day. You receive the exact recommendation individually in the practice. They are removed for eating and brushing.

Are the trays visible in everyday life?

Aligners are transparent and therefore discreet in everyday life. Complete invisibility cannot be promised, but many find them very unobtrusive.

What is a retainer and why do I need it?

A retainer holds the teeth in their new position after treatment, as they otherwise tend to move back. The retention phase secures the result and is a firm part of the therapy.
